Before attending college, or serving in the US Marine Corps, Joe Ramos grew up on the "mean streets" of Chicago's west side. His escape from those "mean streets," was his mother and an Italian priest from Taylor Street who was able to get him into a Catholic high school on Chicago's north side. Before attending college, or serving in the US Marine Corps, Joe Ramos grew up on the "mean streets" of Chicago's west side. His escape from those "mean streets," was his mother and an Italian priest from Taylor Street who was able to get him into a Catholic high school on Chicago's north side. Ramos credits his old high school teachers and the Brothers of the Holy Cross for showing him the way to a brighter future. Before becoming an educator, Ramos served 18 years in the US Marine Corps.. His last active-duty unit was the 4th Light Anti-Aircraft Missile Battalion in Hayward, CA, which was activated for Desert Storm (17 January 1991-28 February 1991). Ramos left the US Marine Corps as a Gunnery Sergeant / E-7, and Logistics Chief / Maintenance Management Officer (MMO). GySgt Ramos, "Fought for you then." He will, "Fight for you now."
GySgt Ramos during his time in the military, was honored with three Honorable Discharges, recognizing his exemplary service. Notably, he pursued higher education while serving in the United States Marine Corps. His academic journey commenced with a master's degree in special education, which was funded 75 % by the US Marine Corps. After leaving the US Marine Corps, Ramos, earned three additional master degrees, showcasing his dedication to personal and professional development. Subsequentially, he delved into the realm of urban studies through a fellowship to the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee's master's in the urban studies program, where he passionately pursued a second master's degree.
Ramos received his third & fourth masters degrees from San Francisco State University. Specifically, he obtained a Master of Arts in adult ed, and a Master of Arts in English: Composition. Alongside his academic pursuits, Ramos is a multifaceted individual, serving as an actor, writer, and former community college English instructor. Describing himself as "an actor in the stage of life."
Ramos passion for the performing arts dates back to his early years when he was cast as an "angel" in a local Christmas play during kindergarten. When Mrs. O'Brien cast him to play an "angel" in the local Christmas play. His mom said his portrayal was adored by the audience due to the unique addition of two curls resembling horns atop his head, inadvertently transforming him into an "angel with horns." The audience loved, him recalled his mom.
Beyond his artistic endeavors, Ramos likes to be involved with the community. Ramos is deeply committed to community engagement. He currently is dedicating his time to volunteering with the Teen Challenge program in Oakland, California.

Ramos has been "in the lion's den" and comes with experience working in in the community, teaching in the schools as a former middle school, and high school teacher. He knows how challenging it is for a teacher in the classroom these days. Joe Ramos is a former special ed, and adult ed school teacher. He is currently a HUSD School Board Trustee.
Joe Ramos has served on the Hayward School Board and on The Eden Regional Occupation Program Board, which represents four School Districts: Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro, San Lorenzo.
Ramos, knows the challenge it takes to be prepared to be a member of the HUSD Board, or in any capacity as a City Council member.
During his time in graduate studies studying at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee, Ramos also worked for the City of Milwaukee. He actively contributed to the City of Milwaukee's Historic Preservation Department and the Department of City Development while gaining valuable practical experience while expanding his academic horizons.
Joe Ramos also worked as a graduate researcher and community organizer for two of the largest Latino non - profit agencies, in the State of Wisconsin. The United Community Center & the Council for the Spanish Speaking, Inc. Ramos coordinated & published an Oral History Project documenting the councils “35th” Annual Anniversary (1964 -1999) of meeting the needs of Milwaukee’s Hispanic Community.
Ramos also acquired much experience working in undergraduate intern positions, prior to going on active duty with the Marine Corps. Undergraduate Intern positions include: an Legislative intern position with State Senator John B. Roe – in The State Capitol of Illinois- Springfield, Illinois 35th Legislative District, Summer of 1975.
Also with the City of Chicago's Office of Manpower, working for the City of Chicago’s Office of Manpower as program auditor- auditing summer programs with youth in the Summer of 1974.
Joe Ramos after being a teacher in the East Bay volunteered over 20 years, serving as a Chaplain's Assistant in the Juvenile Justice Center in San Leandro, CA, working with "at-risk youth," and also working in the adult criminal justice system system, Glenn E. Dyer Jail (Oakland, CA), and Santa Rita Jail (Dublin, CA).
Ramos, brings his experience and dedication to working on the Hayward City Council. Ramos wants to be that "light, that candle " in the City of Hayward.

In part because of their church, they had found a home. After serving as a US Marine, and teaching middle school, Joe Ramos worked for the San Francisco Boy Scouts. Ramos then worked with the San Francisco Juvenile Probation Department & the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco, as a Project Coordinator of a Gang Prevention Program, "The Gang Free Initiative of San Francisco." Joe Ramos also served as a Chaplain's Assistant in the Juvenile Justice Center in San Leandro, CA, in Glenn E. Dyer Jail in Oakland, CA (before they closed down), and in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, CA.
